Stress is such a trigger

Henry had a Grand-mal about 40 minutes ago. Stress was the trigger, I know it. He knows Riley is sick and has been so worried about him.

Henry is a bit of a spook and really relies on Riley in order to help him be more brave. If we lose Riley to this cancer, it's going to be awfully rough on Henry. =(

It is nice to find another pet parent experiencing the same thing. Our 3yr old Ridgeback mix has been having seizures for the past year. They have progressively gotten worse and are now regular cluster seizures every 3 weeks. We have tried her on phenobarbitol and potassium bromide and the use of valium after the onset of a seizure. The side effects of the potassium bromide have been horrible and we are not seeing any benefit of the drug after 3 months. We are now phasing out both the phenobarbitol and the potassium bromide and will start her on Zonisamide twice daily. I am just getting started on blogging and will try to post more about our struggles with the seizures over the past year. We too have ended up in the ER after Lilly experienced 7 seizures (with in 1.5 hrs) and was non responsive. We just pray that this new medicine will do the trick. She is our baby and it just kills us to see her going though this. Next weekend will be 3 weeks since the last cluster (5 seizures that time) so we will be on edge and will not leave her unsupervised until it happens :( Let's hope this new medication works!!

It took me a year to figure things out with Henry, and sometimes even after having things figured out, there will still need to be tweaking here and there. I am just so thankful that we have options and a variety of meds we can try! Pheno plus KBR together is known to give the most side effects. Often times the side effects are worth it though *if* you can get seizure control!

I can so relate to where you are right now, I remember what it was like being in that phase of very actively trying to figure things out.

Do you have Valium at home? I will write a blog entry about valium right now, and the kind we use. I find it helps tremendously with the clusters!

Our dogs, both being sighthounds, are probably both similar in shape and size, so I know all too well what you and your husband must go through with a large dog seizuring!
